Since the Brexit vote in 2016, there has been a lot of talk regarding how this has affected recruitment.
Overall Employment
Immediately after the referendum vote, there was a clear drop in the employment net score. In the years that have followed the vote, however, the proportion of employers looking to increase staff, compared with those who are looking to decrease the size of their team has recovered to what it was before the vote.
Recruitment After the Vote
During 2017, a year after the Brexit vote, the number of employers who intended to employ EU nationals was largely the same as the previous year, across all sectors.
Between Q1 2018 and Q1 2016, there has been a large drop in EU nationals joining the UK workforce. Whilst this has put noticeable pressure on recruitment, during 2018, two-thirds of employers said that despite the vote, they would continue to employ EU nationals.
When employers were asked why they recruit EU nationals, findings from the CIPD demonstrated that the most common was the reason was that employers were not considering nationality as part of the recruitment process. When it came to semi-skilled or unskilled roles, employers said that they couldn’t find domestic applicants to fill those roles.
Outcomes and Solutions
Whilst findings from the CIPD suggested that both UK citizens and EU nationals felt increased job insecurity, organisations have also been found to be up-skilling existing employees as a way to fill hard-to-fill positions as per the 2017 Resource and Talent Planning survey. Additionally, 48% of organisations raised salaries as per the Autumn 2018 LMO survey.
Other solutions employers may consider as a way to drive recruitment is to offer measures such as flexible working hours and clear career development.
