Although we associate an interview with having questions directed at us, we should not overlook the importance of asking our interviewer questions as well. In many ways, preparing excellent questions can be just as impressive as responding with excellent answers. With this in mind, we’ve put together a list of some of the best questions to ask at an interview.
What do you enjoy about your position?
This question is a great one to ask for several reasons. Firstly, it’s a personable question. By that we mean it shows early signs of you being willing to get to know your colleagues and find out what makes them tick. It will also give you insight into how different parts of the company work.
When your interviewer answers this question, make a decision of whether or not their response is genuine. Likewise, if they babble or struggle to think of anything, it might be a warning sign for you that the company might not be the best to work for.
What’s progression like in the company?
Asking about progression and further opportunities is a fantastic way of showing your employers that you’re willing to stick with the company in the long term. It will also show that you’re switched on, motivated and ambitious, which are big ticks for any candidate.
If you’re looking to progress within the company, it’s important that your interviewer is willing to be transparent about the company’s opportunities for progression. If they are unclear or unwilling to share, it’s a big warning sign.
Where can you see the company being in the next five years?
Sticking with the theme, this is a great question to ask to show that you are invested in the company for the long-term. It also shows you aren’t just concerned with your own progress, and that you’re genuinely interested in the growth and direction of the company.
Take this as an opportunity to explore how you might fit and contribute towards the company’s goals and successes.
How might I impress you in the first month?
This shows you are willing to put in the effort from day one. It shows that you’re willing to learn, and that you want to get off on the right foot.
The interviewer should give you some practical advice, too. Providing you get the job, you’ll have a bank of knowledge to ensure you succeed during your probation period.
Do you have any concerns regarding my viability as a candidate?
The final great question we’ll be covering today might seem a little odd, but this is a truly fantastic question to ask at the end of an interview. It gives you a final chance to really sell yourself by responding to any potential shortcomings your interviewer sees in you. You can cover anything you’ve missed and reinforce any qualities of yourself you see to be particularly strong.
