What Do Employers Look For In A Good Candidate?

Employment Agency Tips

When a professional recruitment agency is tasked with finding the perfect candidate for a client, we always make sure we listen to the key criteria they are seeking. It may be we totally disagree with what a corporate employer client is after given the salary restrictions but an experienced recruitment agent can only advise them to change their parameters. If they are prepared to listen that’s great but if not a good employment agency will work with the employer to reach the best compromise possible.

In essence, what the employer wants is the best profile match to the job role that is vacant within the budget allocated for the role. This will consist of:

Relevant Skills

Making sure that the job candidate has previous relevant experience, such as a field sales executive. In this instance the candidate needs to have experience going out and visiting clients on the road not based from an office calling customers without face to face contact.

Relevant skills will also include the market you have had exposure to sell into. So if you are construction biased and the client wants someone from a retail background they will not be interested in a construction candidate however good they may appear. This is why listening from the start is important in matching the client needs to the candidates you speak to.

Company Size

Company size is very important for an employer if you are from a small business background and they are a corporate company who are used to lots of internal processes they may feel the culture shock will be too much for a candidate from a smaller background to adjust to.

Educational Qualifications

Even if academic qualifications are not listed as a key requirement from the employer they will want to see that you have performed to a certain standard in any exams that you have taken. Whether its GCSE’s, A levels or the type of degree you have obtained it will be used when comparing with other candidates who have applied for the job role so any way in which you can differentiate yourself would be good. Additional achievements such as Duke of Edinburgh awards, key sporting achievements or working within the community will add weight to your application.

Personality

This is a quality that is easily forgotten and can make you get the role you want. Employers will be interviewing a number of people for a position and it will get tedious for them interviewing one person after another. They will want to remember you as someone who made their time interesting and that is why personality is important. They will be looking at you as much as a team fit as your ability to do the role so if there are 3 strong candidates for a position the decision will be purely based on how the interviewees felt they engaged with the person. Do not be gushing; just be yourself and inject humour where you feel appropriate as this can be crucial in giving you the edge.
