What Job Should I do?

An image of a light bulb inside a thinking bubble, symbolising thought.

Everyone is different, with different interests, likes, dislikes and skills. Your career path may span many years so it goes without saying that choosing a role you enjoy is necessary for long-term fulfilment and progression. As recruitment specialists we meet a lot of candidates, making us great at deciphering what sort of role a person would be suited to. In our latest post, we discuss some considerations you should make when deciding what job to do.

Your Current Situation

Already have a job

If you already have a job at the moment, consider whether it is the environment you would like to leave or the actual job. If you are not enjoying the job, you probably won’t like it elsewhere either. If you enjoy the job, however, but you would prefer to work in a different location or for a smaller or bigger company, finding the same or a similar job with another company could work well for you.

Looking for a job

If you do not currently have a job, you should ask yourself whether you would like to begin a career, or obtain a job that will fill a stop-gap.

Once you understand the position you are in, you can turn your head to the skills you possess and how you can move forward.

What Do You Enjoy Doing?

Whilst there is nothing wrong with studying a subject because you believe it will help you land a job that provides a lot of money, many people often end up resenting their job or becoming unhealthily stressed if this is the sole deciding factor for their career.

It can be a good idea to try and work the natural skills that you possess and the things that you enjoy into the job you will pick. Natural skills may include being able to speak confidently, being able to gain people’s trust easily, organisation, efficiency and having a helpful nature. If you are struggling to identify the skills you have, ask people you trust for their opinion. You may even look back at previous jobs or work experience you have carried out to identify areas where you naturally excelled. Natural skills can sometimes be difficult to identify because they come so easily to the individual. This, however, does not take away from their importance.

Who do you Want to work for?

Whilst you may not know exactly what company you want to work for, it can be helpful to consider the following:

Is working in a well-known company important to you?
Would you like to work for a small company where you may gain experience more quickly?
Would you like to work for a large company where there may be more scope to move roles?
Is company culture important to you?
